Infancy Gospels

The canonical Gospels say almost nothing about Jesus' childhood, mentioning only his birth, the flight to Egypt, and one episode at age twelve in the Temple. Early Christians, hungry for more details about the Holy Family, composed imaginative narratives filling these gaps. The Protoevangelium of James, the earliest of these works, focuses on Mary's miraculous birth to elderly parents Joachim and Anna, her childhood raised in the Temple, and her perpetual virginity—a text that became foundational to Marian devotion despite never being canonical. The Infancy Gospel of Thomas presents a mischievous, sometimes wrathful boy Jesus who animates clay birds, strikes dead those who offend him, and confounds his teachers with divine wisdom. Later compilations like the Arabic Infancy Gospel added Egyptian miracles, while the History of Joseph the Carpenter gave the foster-father of Jesus a pious deathbed scene. Though rejected as heretical by church fathers like Irenaeus and Pope Gelasius, these texts profoundly shaped medieval Christian art, liturgy, and popular piety, inspiring countless paintings, hymns, and folk traditions about the Holy Family.
